Prerequisite(s): PSYC 101, ANTH 100, WRIT 105, or HONP 100; students in the SEEDS program can take ENGL 110, ENGL 111, ENGL 114, HUMN 151, HUMN 160, HUMN 288, PHIL 106, or SPAN 242 in place of WRIT 105. This course offers an introduction to the principles, theories, research, and applications of multicultural psychology. Students will gain a better understanding of the impact that culture plays in human behavior and interaction between individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and worldviews. Students will broaden their viewpoints on culture, social justice, ethnicity, gender, race, socioeconomic issues, and health disparities. This in turn will help students engage in self-examination as it pertains to their own individual identities to understand their own values and perspective through a multifaceted cultural lens. The knowledge acquired in this course will enrich their understanding and ability to interact more effectively in an increasingly multicultural environment and global community no matter what field or discipline they are pursuing.
