Prerequisite(s): SPAN 504 or department permission. In this course students further develop their abilities to express themselves imaginatively through poetry, defined in the broadest sense. Students engage with traditional topics, but also learn to address the issues of our time through poetry. Students examine a wide variety of styles, ranging from traditional to experimental, contemplative and avant-garde. They analyze and write poetry with an increased focus on creating an individual voice. The course encourages students to take artistic risks while working within the context of multiple traditions.
