Organic Chemistry I

This course involves a study of the reactions, nomenclature, molecular structure, and properties of organic compounds. Functional groups are studied with an emphasis on the mechanisms of their reactions. Hydrocarbons, alkyl halides, alcohols and ethers are studied in detail. Laboratory sessions involve practice in modern organic procedures including syntheses of organic compounds, and analyses using wet and instrumental methods such as gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, polarimetry and refractometry.
