THE PASSIONS

Historical Consciousness Course (H). Open to Freshman only. This is a Freshman Seminar. This course examines and analyzes the notion of “the passions,” a concept that has powerful meaning in discourses of emotion. In other words, we will examine what emotions mean in philosophy, literature, and history, and how they change over time. We will examine historical concepts of the passions and emotions from a range of thinkers from the classical influences, through medieval devotion, through Enlightenment discourse to the modern usage of the work “emotion.” Faculty: A.
