GREECE IN THE 20TH CENTURY

Prerequisite: Open only to juniors and seniors. Historical Consciousness Course (H). This course will investigate conceptions of 20th-century Greece using history, sociology, literature and films by both native Greeks and foreigners. It will examine how the English and Americans conveyed home an image of Greece that drew on the ancient past, and how Greek artists brought home to Greece a modernism learned abroad. The objective of the course is to make students familiar with the interconnectedness of these two constructions of a place on the map and how both constructions form prisms through which real history is filtered.
