CARTOGRAPHY: SCIENCE/ART

Cartography is often described as a meeting place of science and art. This hands-on course is fundamentally directed to teach the student how to communicate spatial information using maps. The course examines the principles and methods for the design and production of maps. The lecture portion of the course focuses on the context of cartographic design: map perception and map use, principles of cartographic design, geovisualization and the graphic choices controlling their effectiveness. Assignments include weekly readings and computer based labs using cartographic software that are designed to complement and reinforce theoretical concepts. Faculty: K. Thomas
